Jazz Welcomed in Sitka’s Winter
Musical Entrepreneurs Bring December Warmth
On a “snow-almost-gone-but-still-frigid-temp” Sunday in mid-December 2023, Sitka had the pleasure of experiencing the warmth & light shared by the “Jazzmas” duet of pianist Steve Hunt and bassist Christian Fabian.
- The intimate venue of the Miner Music Center of Stevenson Hall (on the SFAC campus) was the setting for the first ever Sitka “Christmas Jazz Brunch” – hosted by the Sitka Music Festival as a special winter offering.
- Brunch fare – served buffet-style by Mary & Roger Hames & Music Festival supporters – included scrambled eggs, potatoes & French toast, as well as coffee, tea, wine, Bloody Marys and Mimosas.
Fabian is known for producing the 2023 “Sitka Jazz Week” series of events for Sitkans, visitors and music students. The bassist is an alumnus of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He has played with the Lionel Hampton band, as well as performing and recording with a variety of combos around the U.S. – read more about Fabian on his website here and here.
Duet partner & jazz “co-conspirator” is pianist Steve Hunt, who “throughout his career, has stayed true to an uncompromising vision of composing and performing jazz music from his heart. Steve has continued to push himself technically, focusing on a musical style which is both challenging and meaningful…” Read more about Hunt on his website here.
Notes from Fabian about the Jazzmas concert and Sitka Jazz Week, “We thank Alaska Airlines for donating travel, and getting our musicians to Sitka and back home safely. And many thanks to the Sitka Music Fesitval and to Seamart Quality Foods… for all your ideas, experience and help to make Sitka Jazz happen.”
