Sitka Brass Quintet

Join us for an Easter Brass Concert. Members of the Holiday Brass return on Friday, April 3 at 7pm as the Sitka Brass Quintet to create an unforgettable night of music including spicy Italian madrigals, music about space, sounds evocative of Spanish bullfighting, and and an entire suite of music from West Side Story.

Mark Inouye, one of the stars of the Holiday Brass Show and one of the top trumpet players in the country, is equally at home in the worlds of jazz and classical music. He is the principal trumpeter of the legendary San Francisco Symphony and has performed as a guest principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony. Mark is a frequent soloist with orchestras and other groups around the country and has recorded as a jazz artist. Mark is also a geography nerd and has used his trumpet to take him around the world.

Jeff Karlson is the principal trumpeter for the Juneau Symphony and lives in Ketchikan where he owns his own tour company, Lighthouse Excursions. Jeff grew up in Ketchikan and left as a high school student to begin his professional studies as a trumpet player. He has studied and performed throughout the country. Jeff is equally at home commanding an orchestra with the sound of his trumpet as he is behind the wheel of a 60′ marine vessel. Jeff’s newest project is raising his 1-year-old daughter, Mia with his wife and business partner Rebekka.

Amy Sanchez, french horn player, fell in love with Sitka and bought a house on Galankin Island. When she is not recording studio Hollywood movie scores, performing with major symphony orchestras like the San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Chicago Symphony, she is daydreaming about leaving it all to start a small business flying a float-plane in Southeast Alaska.

Roger Schmidt has been the director of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp for 25 years. He plays trombone with the Juneau Symphony and performs frequently with his friends from the Holiday Brass, a beloved annual concert he started twenty years ago. Roger likes big, crazy projects: when he was younger he tried and failed to paddle a kayak to Japan. In 2011, he took on the leadership of restoring the Sheldon Jackson College Campus after it closed in 2007. So far, over $11 million dollars of restoration has been done and we only have around $20 million to go….

Daryl Johnson used to play tuba all the time as a member of the Louisville Orchestra and as a frequent guest performer with other major symphony orchestras like the San Francisco, New York Philharmonic, and Chicago Symphony. Along the way, Daryl turned his hobby of computer programming into a second career as a software engineer with Amazon Web Services. His next dream is to turn his obsession with ocean kayaking into a full-time vocation.
