The Alaska Native Artist Residency Program 2024 will include the following artists during the month of September:
- James G̱ooch Éesh Hart, Lingit carver (Aug 20-Sept. 8)
- Tina Cupell’aq Harness, Mixed Yup’ik beader (Sept. 12-Oct. 2)
Harness is scheduled to give another talk on Friday, Sept. 20 from 2-3pm, on a selection of cultural belongings from the museum’s permanent collection. For more info, call (907) 747-6233.
In addition to creating art at the museum and studying the permanent collection, resident artists also hold lectures and hands-on-classes. The talks and classes will likely be held in-person but may also be on Zoom. The Alaska Native Artist Residency Program is underwritten by the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum.
Artist-in-residence Tina Harness (Yup’ik) spoke in-person Friday, Sept. 13 at the Sheldon Jackson Museum. In her talk entitled, “Traditional Relevance in our Modern Creative World,” Harness spoke about the ties between Yup’ik traditional art (everyday tools and wares) and how it influences Yupiit modern creativity today… 09/13/24 Zoom Meeting was CANCELLED due to Sitka-wide internet outage.
