Curcuma longa – Turmeric – is pretty popular these days. This bright yellow root that has been long used in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine is now widely recognized as a potent medicinal herb.

It seems that what draws so many to Turmeric is its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is known as a tonic herb – an herb that supports the overall health of the body. Here are some examples:

  • Turmeric is a a powerful circulatory aid, invigorating and moving blood which makes it useful in helping with congestion of all forms. Not only does it move the blood but cleanses it as well making Turmeric a great choice for detoxing.
  • Turmeric is known to help relax the smooth muscles of the intestine which help to push food through the intestines. It can also be helpful with digestive complaints such as bloating or gas.
  • Turmeric also can help bring relief to those who struggle with joint pain, mobility, swelling, or arthritis. Powerful anti-inflammatory, circulatory, and pain relieving effects makes it a helpful choice.
  • Less inflammation in the body equals less inflammation in the brain so Turmeric may also help with mood issues. Regular use of turmeric may be helpful with those who experience chronic anxiety or depression.

Leah’s preferred way to get more Turmeric is simply to cook with it. Sprinkle a bit of it, or cut a slice or two of the fresh root, into a pot of rice while it’s cooking. Maybe put a pinch or two of the powder in pancake batter. And it is known that pairing Turmeric with black pepper makes it easier for the body to absorb. One way to ingest both Turmeric & black pepper is by making a cup of Golden Milk.
